Vintage clothes are really weird in the way they divide people – some people LOVE them (me), some people LOATHE them (my sister) and some people can’t think of anything worse than walking even a metre in a (potentially) dead woman’s clothes, let alone a mile in a dead man’s shoes.

In Ilkley, the smart little town near where I grew up in North Yorkshire, there was a proliferation of charity shops, and due to the relatively high-net-worth population of said town, these charity shops were jammed to the rafters with absolute treasures of a grown-up-kind. Hermes scarves, Chanel purses, smart little Versace gold-buckle waist belts and an absolute WEALTH of Burberry were all at our teenage disposal. I’m not talking trashy check here – we bought beautiful classic macs, scarves and the ULTIMATE (still got it, still love it) bright red Paddington Bear-style Burberry duffle coat with a checkered wool lining. Next-level amazing.

Me and my bestest ever friend Laura Sheedy used to trawl these shops with an almost fevered determination on a daily basis when we were 17, even dubbing the circular route between them ‘The Circuit’. We’d meet at The Crescent for an afternoon glass of Pinot Grigio (such teens), then start on The Grove in Oxfam (an obvious choice and never really giving up any gems), via Shelter (slightly downbeat but heavy on accessories), across the high street to Save The Children (the jackets! The dresses!) and always saving the jewel in the crown ’til last – Good Neighbours.

‘The Good’ was run by some turbo-riche little old ladies who clearly knew a thing or two about luxury, and it was literally chocka with delights. Now when I say that vintage divides people, what I really mean was that it divided Laura and I on a daily basis. We’d walk up the street as inseparable besties, but as soon as the tinkly doorbell of The Good came into earshot, we were over.

Paces would quicken, heartbeats race a little faster, until we were practically clawing each other out of the way to get in there first. God help us if we happened upon a piece at the same time – (vintage Chanel) handbags at dawn.

Some of the pieces that she and I procured from the (now sadly closed) Good Neighbours are still staples of our wardrobes, and every time I wear a piece I always remember those Halcyon Days of being young and carefree, having fairly unimaginative tastes in white wine, and running around town with my best friend in the sunshine dressed in ridiculously chic old-lady gear. Epic good times x
