You know when you have a favourite thing and somehow you can’t possibly imagine what must have filled the favourite-thing gap before said thing came along? Well, that’s how I feel about my car.
Firstly, it’s not my car, it’s OUR car – it was mine and James’s first joint purchase and I love it soooooo much more for being ours.
Secondly, it’s not an ‘it’, it’s a ‘she’ – the car is a white 1982 Mark 1 Golf Cabriolet – the exact same type that my amaze friend George Scarbrough had in London when we were younger. We thought her car was the ultimate in shazziness (it did have a heart-shaped aerial) so we christened her ‘The Shaz’. Since mine is an exact replica of hers, we have, with glaring unoriginality, christened mine ‘The Shaz’ too.
She is the coolest, jazziest, most rad car EVS - the ‘80s and ‘90s are my ultimo eras for aesthetics, and the look of The Shaz just seems to add to the visual vibe wherever we go.
Her only downside was that she only had a tape player (or that I had no tapes, dependent upon your view). This all changed when all-round turbo hero Kitt Proudfoot went to London and returned bearing gifts – the entire tape collection from the MENCAP charity store on Shepherds Bush Road. So my sunny days are now soundtracked by the power-vox of Tina Turner’s Greatest Hits and the soulful tones of Marvin Gaye (I’m somewhat less fond of the Hurricane Power Force Tropical String Band – very jangly indeed).
Anyway, so basically I love my wheeeeeeeelz, and she’s SO unbelievably ‘80s that Ana Lui and I thought we’d smash out a quick photo shoot in the car park of Tropicana Beach Club (also so ‘80s) beacuse I was wearing a suitably Top-Gun-esque bathing suit. People looked at us weird. We loved it.
One piece bathing suit by über-swimwear label We Are Handsome from Colette, vintage leopard print silk shirt from The Salvation Army, red cork wedges by Miu Miu, red Lolita sunshades from a Lucky-Lucky man on the beach and all my beautiful jewellery, as ever, from Daisy plus bone earrings by Mawi (a 30th birthday present from the wondrous Catherine Quinmy) and my leopard print ponyskin clutch from Reiss.
