Trend watch: Spring Summer 2010

Finally! After all the closing parties here in Ibiza, the past few weeks have been relatively quiet with most of the dancers, bar staff, boat workers et al leaving in droves, leaving the locals, out of season travellers and the stragglers who aren’t quite sure what their next move is. It’s been nice to wake up without a hangover, and now that the clocks have changed, to a bit of light!  All good news considering it’s time for me review the Spring/Summer 2010 preview for women.

Whilst many cities hold their own Fashion Weeks, there are only four that really count (to us!): New York, London, Milan and Paris.  They are held in that order over September/October.

New York fashion week (for me at least) is as much about who is sitting in the front row as the clothes themselves, and this year we saw grande dame Madonna, the über chic Charlize Theron, the inimitable Lady Ga Ga, alternative queen Kirsten Dunst and it girl Agyness Dean (with hot new black bowl cut hair!) to name a few…

The US look is always more conservative than in Europe, not the place you are going to see anything too shocking, although there were plenty of long tanned legs consistently on the runways this year. Yes indeed, hemlines look set to rise in 2010, so be sure to bear that in mind when you go for your fourth helping of Christmas pudding this year!

London was next. Over the past few years many designers (British included) have shunned London in favour of its continental sisters, but this year was the 25th anniversary, and some very British labels made a welcome return to UK shores. Burberry in particular, showed in London rather than Milan and afterwards even the legendary US Vogue Editor-In-Chief Anna Wintour said it was a ‘great day for London fashion.’  Edgy Australian label sass+bide also favoured London over New York for its own 10th anniversary, as did Matthew Williamson. Bravo chaps!

In Milan it was the usual suspects who sparkled, with sexy figure hugging dresses and more shorts (especially worn with jackets) being a highlight. Not too sure about D&G’s puffball hotpant version, but on the other hand they clearly weren’t designed with me in mind.

As for Paris… well the main thing everyone was talking about was Lindsay Lohan’s design debut for Ungaro. Not kindly however – but then what was she thinking with those heart shaped nipple covers? I suppose at least if she’s designing she’s not getting arrested. And it’s a look that we know will work well for those sassy Pacha dancers.

Now all the shows are over, the designers’ books are closed and all we can do is sit back and wait to see what hits the shelves next season… and seeing as we aren’t dancing as much during these winter months, maybe do an extra Powerplate session to get those legs in shape for next year!
