Well I don’t mind admitting I ate my fair share of the pies over winter, which was all very well when it was cooler in Ibiza as I could hide my new curves under a fabulous Vivienne Westwood coat. With the return of the sun though, and all these opening parties to attend, I’ve been finding the clothes I bought in the middle of summer don’t quite fit as well now as they did then! Instead of the figure-hugging numbers I was planning to wear out, it’s been back-to-black until I do a few more Powerplate sessions.
Fortunately 2010 is a good year for accessories! Jewellery trends for are big, bold and dramatic - think statement necklaces, cocktail rings with huge stones, and big hoop earrings. You can put those Tiffany hearts and subtle gold lockets away, Bling. Is. Back. (Did it ever leave I hear some of you say?)So, who is creating the season’s biggest statements? Starting here on the island, there are many talented local designers who create the kind of pieces that are sure to get your fingers, neck, ears or wherever you want, noticed. If you’re in the high-end market, San Miguel based Natasha Collis’ diamond and gold nugget layer necklaces make a very impressive statement indeed… but you certainly wouldn’t want to wear them to the Space Opening party!
For men and women, Jade Jagger’s friend and muse, tattoo artist Neil Ahern crafts Tibetan inspired skull rings, plus long gold and silver necklaces. They are legendary here in Ibiza (as are his ink designs) but getting your hands on them isn’t easy… Your best bet is to book him for a bit of body art and ask him. Be warned though – some of the world’s top DJs and models are in the queue before you!
Of course jewellery doesn’t have to be high-end to make an impact. There are lots of impressive pieces, old and new, that you can pick up at the markets around the island or at shops like Purnima in the winding streets of Ibiza port. Or you could make something yourself… but then again, who wants to thread beads when you could be out sipping cocktails in the sun? Certainly not me!
For me, it’s all about the fabulous gold spiky ring from Mawi of London’s ‘Dynamite’ collection. It simply screams ‘I’m going to get served before you’, and would cause a nasty injury if anyone dares to comment on my behind! Teamed with the matching spiky gold pendant it’s so much of a statement I won’t have to speak all night!
