Sydney is a long way from Ibiza no matter how you travel (I Dream of Jeannie excepted), but since both have sunny weather and a life revolving around the beach it’s no surprise the fashions hailing from Down Under suit the white isle so well.
sass + bide is one Aussie label that does just that, epitomizing Ibiza chic from the beaches to the bars. Launched in 1999 by friends Sarah-Jane (Sass) Clarke and Heidi (Bide) Middleton as a women’s denim label, they quickly gained a cult following in Oz for their super low-rise skinny jeans. Since then the label has gone from strength to strength and now includes a Ready to Wear collection, including slinky tops and sexy dresses. Sparkles are often a feature… and we do like those (and not just in a chilled champagne glass!)
This season you’ll see sequinned ribcages, glittery zebra prints and a dress with diamantes placed to look like twinkling stars in the sky. So in Ibiza these have dual functionality, either sparkling in the sunlight or under the dancefloor lights – or both.
Although sass + bide became known for its denim, the legwear of the moment is actually not a pair of jeans, but the now infamous ‘Black Rats’ leggings. A cross between skinny jeans and leggings, they are made from soft stretchy fabric, and ruched at the side to flatter the leg. So those of us who normally can’t, don’t or won’t wear leggings actually look amazing in them too! A godsend really, since we all know those villa parties in the hills can get a bit chilly later on, but due to the heat jeans are completely out of the question.
Black Rats debuted at Australian Fashion week last year, and were supposed to be for the winter ‘09 ranges, however the international fashion pack went wild and demand was so high they began production on the line immediately. The waiting lists have died down a bit now, but with new models such as PVC, bronze and silver Rats (in addition to the plain black version), they are still hot, hot, hot. White’s very own Miss W is a fan, having snapped up the Bronze the minute they landed in reVOLVER alongside the rest of the fabulously sparkly new sass + bide collection – and you can’t get a better testimonial than that!
