Sexy, stylish, sophisticated, stupidly expensive… while I could be talking about Ibiza in the summer months, on this occasion I’m actually thinking of something Italian: the divine Gucci. The brand even has a word to describe its own fabulousness: Guccissima!
At the recent Gucci autumn/winter fashion show, it seemed the 1970s were making a bit of a comeback including orange, purple, green… oh, and flares. About time! Skinny jeans have been in fashion since sass + bide came on the scene over 10 years ago and while every season someone tries to say they have been replaced (remember when high-waisted jeans were supposed to be the Next Big Thing, then boyfriend style?), let’s face it, skinnies have reigned supreme. With Gucci leading the way in 2011… this could be the year they are shaken off their pedestal.
While it may seem a bit early to be thinking about winter already, here at reVOLVER we’ve just done the buying for AW11/12 and the ‘70s influence is unmistakable. Whether it’s down to following Gucci’s lead (you have to admit they are a fashion leader rather than follower) or just a general feeling in the design world that this is the way forward (via a step back in time), I love it and it’s an era that’s perfectly suited to Ibiza’s colourful, bohemian lifestyles (and wardrobes).
Not only will there be plenty of colour next season, but fabulous materials and textures, and some shapes we haven’t seen for decades too. Flares are just the beginning! I must add however, that the ‘70s trend, for the moment anyway, is solely for the girls – even the fashion-forward designers of Gucci haven’t dared to extend it to men. Well – at least not on the flares front.
Shame, I was looking forward to a bit of Saturday Night Fever at Pacha…
