Unless you’ve been living on the moon (and next year even that won’t be an excuse if you believe in a certain Sir Branson), you’ll have heard all about the doom and gloom that is the Global Financial Crisis. Banks closing all around the world, governments bailing out bankrupt companies, unemployment numbers on the rise and here on Ibiza’s terracotta coloured home soil, apparently the tourist numbers were down in 2009. Let me tell you though, it didn’t seem to make getting a reservation at KM5 any easier in the height of summer!
On the good side however (and without getting too technical), interest rates are down, and therefore so are most mortgages and rents, plus there are furious price wars going on between everything from new cars and airfares to mobile phones and gym memberships. So provided you have a job, you may well be in a better position than you were before La Crisis reared her pesky head last year when it comes to getting a good deal.
In terms of shopping, sales have long been traditional at this time of year, as stores do their annual stocktakes and attempt to clear out all of their old merchandise to make way for the new. Sadly, because prices usually stay high until Christmas, we can’t get away with saying to Aunt Florence ‘Oh, I left your present at home, I’ll give it to you next week’ (like you can on her birthday) while waiting for the post-Christmas sales to kick off – however here in Ibiza, the end of the tourist season back in October meant that the sales started early. Ker-ching!
There have been some amazing promotions on the island (not sales –apparently it’s illegal to call them that in Spain) offering up to 50 per cent off brand new, gorgeous goods, whether for your home, your garden or – and let’s face it, this is our biggest priority given that this IS the style blog after all – your wardrobe.
Ibiza’s fashion pack has been busy, snapping up some amazing bargains on clothes, jewellery and accessories, for themselves (wardrobe fillers) and for presents (stocking fillers), just because they are so affordable! Even better, those people who were going back to visit friends and relatives in other countries at Christmas have been able to do that thing everyone dreams of – buy a gift that looks like it cost a lot but actually didn’t (and trust us, Aunty Flo will be none the wiser!)
reVOLVER’s 50 per cent off sale continues until January 9th 2010, when we close for a month to rest our weary legs. Vivienne Westwood at half price? Yes please! sass+bide for a steal? You don’t have to ask me twice. See by Chloé, Twenty8Twelve by s.miller and Bolongaro Trevor at just a fraction of their retail cost? Well, it would be rude not to! In the meantime, for those who ‘don’t do sales’ or were fashion forward enough to snap up all the best stuff when it previewed earlier this year, we have a few of next Spring/Summer’s collections in-store (yes, already!). They are currently being guarded under lock and key behind the counter for now, so you’ll need to ask for a sneak preview.
If there’s a crisis around these parts it’s certainly not a fashion one.
