Ibiza boutique blog: Great hattitude

Ibiza boutique blog: Hattitude

Hats are back! Not just because of the Big Freeze going on in Europe at the moment (the rumours are true – it’s actually been snowing here in Ibiza for the first time in decades!) and not just because we’re all getting out of bed a bit later now it’s winter and haven’t got time to wash our hair every day! It‘s a nice coincidence though, that headwear as a statement is rocking the world’s fashion capitals right now… and if I may say so, the trend is much better for men than women.

Ibiza might not (officially) be a world fashion capital, but the trend is definitely here too. At DC-10 on NYD there were plenty of interesting outfits (no photos of course, to protect the innocent) but the assortment of hats really stood out.  There were some pretty standard types – baseball caps and oversized beanies for instance, but also an array of others: pilgrim hats, fedoras with long feathers, bowlers, berets, military style caps, antique helmets, cowboys and even a top hat (plus an honorary mention to the celeb-craze plush animal hats)! The friend I went with was wearing a stunning sequin trimmed felt fedora, and within minutes of arriving was accosted by people who wanted to wear her hat, dance with it, try to run off with it… fortunately they didn’t get very far in the crowd!

At DC-10 the hats served a double purpose – not just a fashion item, but to cover bleary eyes, long after it was acceptable to wear sunglasses. Although I still did spy numerous pairs of reVOLVER Emergency Sunglasses around the room… plus an awful lot more people who needed them too!

Of all the hats around at the moment the pilgrim style hat is probably my favourite, because it’s not a style that’s reworked into fashion very often and those donning it (in such places as the underground clubs of Paris) are fashion’s risk takers. Not so long ago the tall pointy shape was reserved for US Thanksgiving parties, however when Dior Homme put the pilgrim on its catwalk recently it most definitely became a fashion piece. Yohji Yamamoto’s Y-3 also has a similar style coming out for its next collection, and I’m sure that He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named (oh ok, John Galliano) used to parade them out quite frequently back in the day.

If you like the idea of a hat but aren’t quite so daring as to go for a pilgrim style (it is rather dramatic, being so tall!) then just in at reVOLVER are some gorgeous printed silk fedoras from Italian label Daniele Alessandrini. No two are the same and the style is a classic.

Although hats are back in mode, I don’t think Ibiza’s most famous hat wearer, Vaughan who hosts the Funky Room at Pacha, will quite be shaking in his boots (or hat!) yet. Whilst the hat trend is set to continue for a while yet, his designs are in a league of their own.

Hats all folks!
