Sure, there was DC10 to attend on New Year’s day here in Ibiza, but in fashion circles there was another event causing a buzz on the internet all around the world: another new episode of my former favourite TV show, Absolutely Fabulous. Officially it was aired on the BBC in the UK, but you’ve gotta love technology – within minutes it was wired all around the world!
Two episodes into the latest season, Patsy and Edina are 50-something, but still chain smoking, champagne scoffing, botoxed fashion victims with drug problems… they’d probably fit right in here throughout summer! Imagine them charging around the island in a Hummer, waltzing right up to the front of the DC10 queue insisting they were on the VIP list (only to find there is none), ending up in San Antonio police station no doubt!
After the festivities were over however, I’m sure they’d be hitting the winter sales. The sales are on here now, which is be the norm in many other parts of the world, but generally in Spain they don’t start until after Kings Day on January 6 – our little island is finally moving with the times! I remember one Boxing Day where I got up early to hit the shops as soon as they opened, only to be told everything was business as usual… D’oh!
But thankfully this year (or technically, last year) was different. You may have heard there’s a financial crisis in Spain, and retailers are also finally realising that Spain is part of a global economy - if someone can buy something online at 50 percent off, they aren’t going to get it locally at full price! It seems the people have been spending too – whether it’s the sales, or the multitude of El Gordo lottery winners (the biggest prize money ever this past Christmas) is anyone’s guess.
The perfect excuse to shop online!
Personally, I’m a huge fan of online shopping, and if you saw any of the footage from the Boxing Day sales in other countries, you’d agree it’s the way forward. No crowds, no cold weather and a couple of clicks and you’re done. We launched our reVOLVER site in October with our sale items available both online and in the boutique along with the current collections. Which means that even if Patsy and Edina can’t get to Ibiza this winter they can still snap up their favourite stuff at a bargain… and so can you!
