The metamorphosis of what was once the much-loved tapas lounge and wine bar El Pato into the all-new whiz-bang high-fashion ultra-exclusive dining and entertainment concept NOVUM has been on over-exposure the last few weeks, however despite the hype, was there anyone aside from the chosen few and the construction crews who had ACTUALLY seen inside the high wall?
Well, all would be revealed this weekend. The pre-opening, an invitation only event for selected island residents was (obviously!) first up, and Miss W and the White-ettes hightailed it from the Cafe Mambo opening (after waiting politely for the sun to set first of course!) to the red carpet event, only pausing for a brief second in the car to upgrade the flip-flops for stilettos and add a quick swipe of lip gloss. That’s the thing about Ibiza style – you can go from beach to bar, rock concert to restaurant or sunset to soiree with just a few essentials stored in the glove compartment of your car.
Just in time to catch the bewitching dusky hues setting over the hills, we cruised up the NOVUM red carpet past photographers, Ibiza A-listers and uninvited wannabes, eager to get inside. Glass of the finest French champagne? Well thank you, don’t mind if I do…
The first problem of course, was where to go, there was just so much to look at, so many things to try and of course, so many people to see. The boutique, just off to the side of the sophisticated terrace restaurant seemed like the perfectly raised vantage point to view all the action, so we made a beeline for it, discovering a boudoir-style cornucopia of fashion and style, with Ibiza’s own Kurru Kurru at the helm (of course – their reign on Ibiza fashion continues!), alongside our all-new Ibiza style discovery, Julia Cranz, she of the elegant headpieces, stylish hats and beautiful doe-eyes that instantly make you think you’ll look just like her if you don one of her creations! Don’t I wish!
From there, it was to the bar (bypassing the super-cool mama rolling traditional hand made cigars, I mean they look super cool, but ergh, the smell!) but which one? Glassware shone and bottles glistened from Reunion Bar, the Grand Khaan sign dazzled and lured us to the back meanwhile the softly lit piano room tempted us with the unmistakable scent of fresh mint, an occupational hazard associated with making millions of mojitos. Oh – you mean that one’s for me? Why, thank you very much!
After maneuvering our way through the throes, we found the remainder of White-ettes making the most of the warmth inside the wok kitchen (it was a chilly night indeed!), where the chef was playing with fire – LITERALLY! While tonight he was only sizzling up some samples, I can’t wait to come back for the real deal very soon. In fact… the very next night!
Yes indeed, there were two more nights of NOVUM celebrations to come (not to mention an entire season ahead), and Miss W planned to maximize the occasion. The only problem? What to wear! The style stakes were high, from short and sparkly mini-dresses, sophisticated maxi-dresses, embellished creations, off-the-shoulder sheaths plus plenty of freshly washed and blow dried hair. Miss W has always like a challenge… just a shame you couldn’t SEE all the effort we’d gone to when we were interviewed for Ibiza Sonica’s live radio stream on Saturday night…
THE GOOD: Wow, wow, wow! It’s strange to think that just six weeks ago, NOVUM still resembled a building site… because what stood proudly tonight was amazing. Modernity met tradition, with the white-walled Ibicencan fincas standing beside the peak-roofed white tents that wouldn’t be out of place in Dubai, an element we think will go down very well with Ibiza’s multi-cultural cognoscenti!
THE BAD: Cripes, you’d think that the good people – THE VIP PEOPLE no less – hadn’t been fed in weeks the way they were clamoring and fighting for morsels of food before it had even come out of the kitchen window. Look – the tempura was mouth-wateringly delicious, the gyoza were finger-licking good and the sushi was no less than a little bite of heaven, but as for all these well-dressed respectable people acting like it was feeding time at the zoo? Not cool.
THE GOSSIP: In the lead up to the party, there was plenty of hype about the exclusive-to-NOVUM Grand Khaan premium vodka, but unfortunately this Mongolian delicacy hadn’t arrived on the island in time to make its Ibiza society debut. Blame that lingering volcanic ash… and make a reservation for next week!
