Fashion red cards at the World Cup

Ibiza Style Blog, World Cup fashion

We’re already smack bang in the middle of the World Cup, and despite Ibiza being such an international melting pot, the island has (thus far) been slightly devoid of any OTT World Cup fever. Sure you can go to the Dutch, German or English bars in Figueretes, but they have a bit too much atmosphere at times…

But it’s still easy to spot the football supporters, usually due to their fashion sense (or lack thereof). What more can I say? At least the World Cup has given some British tourists a legitimate excuse to wear their football shirts on holidays… though now they’ve been knocked out I hope the message gets across it was only acceptable for a short time only!

From the Spanish contingent however, apart from some kids in the España t-shirts they are selling at Eroski (sadly not not a high-street fashion brand, it’s our local supermarket!) I haven’t seen much team support here at all, and therefore no major fashion disasters. You’d hope not either. After all, we are in Ibiza and not the Costa del Sol!

As for at the tournament on telly, well that’s a different matter altogether. The Spanish commentators on Cuatro have been dressing in matching polo shirts and bomber jackets – yellow cards for that please!

For me the ultimate red card has got the be handed to Maradona in his hip hop get-up, compete with giant crucifixes and diamond earrings. Due to the distinct lack of WAGS at the World Cup this time around, we can be thankful there aren’t a lot more to go round…

On the plus side, the 18-carat gold Louis Vuitton trophy case designed specifically to hold the World Cup is just indescribably fabulous. Also, the England strip was actually designed by a Saville Row tailor… but fat lot of good it did them, since they played more like tailors than professional footballers anyway.

Despite the absence of World Cup fever in Ibiza, I’ve spotted more footballers and retired footballers on holiday here than ever before, players from everywhere from Real Madrid to Manchester United. They’ve all been looking rather fabulous too… so I guess the moral of the story is that looking good and enjoying yourself comes first here in Ibiza and football second.

Even during the World Cup.

PS. After writing this blog during the day yesterday, I may have to stand corrected in regards to the lack of WCF – Bar Alegria, opposite reVOLVER, was going off last night while Brazil were playing! Seriously – hundreds of people and not a spare inch of pavement!
