You’d probably never know it just by looking at me, but Miss W’s favourite occasion has always been Halloween. While I didn’t grow up anywhere that trick or treating took place, I always envied those American kids and as I got older, aspired to become somewhat of a scream queen. When I arrived in Ibiza, I was thrilled of course to realise that Halloween was a Major Event on the social calendar, one that required maximum effort and military like planning precision…

Even more so than frocking up for a night at Pacha in the summer! Continue reading Halloween in Ibiza: 31/10/09

If I were handing out the White Awards for the summer season of 2009, there’s no doubt the clear winner of best new party venue would be the runaway success story of the summer, the fantastical grown-up playground of Ushuaia in Playa D’en Bossa. And to prove they not only know how to throw amazing parties, but they also know how to go out with a bang, today, was the closing party to end all closing parties, a 13-hour seaside extravaganza with none other than Miss W’s favourite DJ Luciano at the helm.

(I PROMISE after today not to mention his name again… well until next summer anyway!)

Another year, another DJ awards ceremony. Another awards ceremony, another wardrobe crisis. Another wardrobe crisis, another reason to hit the sales… But oops, I digress! Back to the business of the DJ awards…

As with previous years, tonight’s proceedings began with a cocktail party for nominees and press at Ocean Drive Hotel, where the mojitos were free-flowing and the music came from a quirky DJ set-up in a funky little Red Bull-mobile. Then was time to hotfoot it down the road – just a hop, skip and a shimmy down the red carpet – to the hallowed halls of Pacha, where the ceremony itself took place. I know, I know, I know. For two years, all I’ve ever raved about (and raved along to) is Luciano, Luciano, Luciano. Well, I can’t help it if he happens to be the host of this summer’s most fabulous beach party, regularly graces the decks at my favourite club nights or if he’s nominated for the techno DJ of the year award.

So when I received an invitation to the world premiere of La Ruta Del Sol, a film documenting Luciano’s recent South American tour, who was I to say no? Come rain, hail or shine, I would be there. And yes, there was rain… Continue reading La Ruta Del Sol world premiere with Luciano: 22/09/09

Ibiza loves a daytime party. Ibiza loves dancing in the sand. And while the critics have been saying it can no longer be done, the bevy of beautiful beach bars on Playa D’en Bossa have been busy proving them wrong all summer – and today, it was Sands’ turn to shine with a very special event featuring none other than mega star DJ Carl Cox spinning a unique funk, soul and jazz session as a treat for island residents and visitors alike…

This summer Miss W has spent quite a bit of time at Sands and is a big fan of the food, the service and the surroundings. However, I have to admit that when I heard Carl Cox would be playing – even though it was going to be a set that was worlds away from his Tuesday night techno style – I couldn’t help but wonder just how it was going to work. From the setup to the sound, I just couldn’t imagine it. But of course, like most ventures under the experienced eyes of Jason Bull and Alex Pascual (along with Carl’s Space crew), it couldn’t have been a more perfectly executed event, from start to finish.

Pop artists making the crossover into dance music via special guest performances in Ibiza’s famous nightclubs is nothing new (but always worth a gawk!). Back in the day, Kylie Minogue did it at Cream, this year Lady Gaga performed at Wonderland and tonight, none other than infamous rapper – and regular Ibiza visitor – Dizzee Rascal would continue the tradition, taking to the stage normally occupied by the sexy Pacha dancers in his own inimitable London stylee.

Friday after-work drinks are a long-standing working week tradition around the world, however here in Ibiza, since every day is like a weekend (and many people are on holidays!), it’s a ritual we don’t really get to indulge in that often. However on this toasty warm Friday afternoon, the last of a long, hot August, Miss W and the White-ettes were given the perfect reason to bunk off from work, sip sangria on the beach and kick-start their weekends in style…

Art for Ibiza’s sake

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

By Takashi Murakami

You know, I’ve never considered myself an art critic, but I know what I like… and what I like is modern, urban, edgy and (if I may say so) generally quite expensive. Which could explain why the walls of my modern apartment are relatively bare… a fact I have decided, quite recently in fact, to change.

Yes folks, it’s time Miss W made an investment that didn’t end up hanging in her wardrobe (I could argue that fashion is art, but I’d be arguing with myself and that’s a whole other hypnotherapy session just waiting to happen) and thankfully over the course of the last few weeks I have had the chance to check out some amazing art – some in the form of touring exhibitions and others that were created right here on the white isle.

Bambuddha Grove 10th Anniversary: 10/08/09

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

Photography by Gabriel Vazquez

The tenth anniversary of Ibiza institution Bambuddha Grove marks a milestone, not just in terms of time honoured and served (and let me just say they’ve certainly served the who’s who of island visitors and residents over the last decade) on white isle, but also in the long and interesting history of owner and creator John Moon and for the future of his daughter Sasha and son Jonjon. For it is in 2009 that John Moon plans to enter retirement, passing Bambuddha’s prosperous reins over to his children… and if that’s not worthy of a party, then I don’t know what is!
