Sure, there was DC10 to attend on New Year’s day here in Ibiza, but in fashion circles there was another event causing a buzz on the internet all around the world: another new episode of my former favourite TV show, Absolutely Fabulous. Officially it was aired on the BBC in the UK, but you’ve gotta love technology – within minutes it was wired all around the world!

Two episodes into the latest season, Patsy and Edina are 50-something, but still chain smoking, champagne scoffing, botoxed fashion victims with drug problems… they’d probably fit right in here throughout summer! Imagine them charging around the island in a Hummer, waltzing right up to the front of the DC10 queue insisting they were on the VIP list (only to find there is none), ending up in San Antonio police station no doubt!

After the festivities were over however, I’m sure they’d be hitting the winter sales. The sales are on here now, which is be the norm in many other parts of the world, but generally in Spain they don’t start until after Kings Day on January 6 – our little island is finally moving with the times! I remember one Boxing Day where I got up early to hit the shops as soon as they opened, only to be told everything was business as usual… D’oh!

But thankfully this year (or technically, last year) was different. You may have heard there’s a financial crisis in Spain, and retailers are also finally realising that Spain is part of a global economy - if someone can buy something online at 50 percent off, they aren’t going to get it locally at full price! It seems the people have been spending too – whether it’s the sales, or the multitude of El Gordo lottery winners (the biggest prize money ever this past Christmas) is anyone’s guess.

The perfect excuse to shop online!

Personally, I’m a huge fan of online shopping, and if you saw any of the footage from the Boxing Day sales in other countries, you’d agree it’s the way forward. No crowds, no cold weather and a couple of clicks and you’re done. Which means that even if Patsy and Edina can’t get to Ibiza this winter they can still snap up their favourite stuff at a bargain… and so can you!

Right now, it totally doesn’t feel like Christmas in Ibiza (depending on where you’re from of course!) because of the amazing weather we’re having. Here at reVOLVER, we were still selling Syd & Rex swimming trunks a couple of weeks ago! So (hopefully!) this means there’s no chance of the current European ‘Christmas Sweater’ trend hitting our fair shores before Santa does.

If you’ve seen any of these novelty knits you’ll know the designs are either best left for children under five (just like Sesame Street tees), or for tea cosies. They are certainly fun, but fashion? Only if you’ve had a few too many mulled wines! So it’s slightly amusing, and very interesting to see that this year, some (quite respectable) retail outlets have given them the thumbs up this season!

Net-a-Porter – arguably THE most influential online fashion retailer on the planet – actually asked a few designers to create a Christmas knit exclusively for them! Marc Jacobs’ and Matthew Williamson‘s designs are colourful and sparkly, with not a snowman or reindeer in sight – shame the same couldn’t be said for some of the others… Why, oh why, is there such a public appetite for Christmas clothing?

Here in Ibiza instead of donning novelty sweaters and going to office Christmas parties, we all get together to eat oysters and drink cava in Plaza del Parque in the week leading up to December 25. It’s when the Spanish start their Christmas shopping (the coming of the three kings on January 6 is the official gift-giving date in Spain) and it starts to get busy at reVOLVER.

So far this Christmas our best sellers are scarves – they are such an easy gift and always a winner, plus many of them are unisex so if you buy one for your other half you can steal it back again to wear yourself. Bonus.

A Rudolph jumper wouldn’t get you served any faster at Hostal Parque, so there’s little point in anyone in Ibiza having one anyway. Might as well save the money for something to wear at New Year… when your outfit really does matter!

It’s no secret fashion magazines work many months in advance when producing their seasonal editorials, and Italian Grazia are no exception. The glossy girlie mag set up camp in Ibiza – with the expert production assistance of 365 Productions – during the height of summer to shoot their Autumn fashion pages, with stunning model and actress Belén Rodriguez starring as covergirl.

Stylist Sabrina Bolzoni and photographer Roberto D’Este dreamed up an elaborate production not unlike a movie, with Ibiza’s varied backdrops setting the perfect autumnal scenes – despite the heat soaring to 30 degrees by midday in some cases!

The steamy heat seemed to intensify Belén’s – also the face (and body!) of Miss Sixty – sultry looks as she rotated through a wardrobe that included long dresses, tuxedos plus sexy and chic couture dresses.

Using classic white finca walls to accentuate colour, dusty country trails to add drama, the striking and expansive Mediterranean sea and bright blue skies to contrast against dark hues, the results were picture perfect in every frame.

Italian paparazzi strained to catch a glimpse of Grazia’s covergirl, though they were kept at a distance throughout the shoot, photographs later emerged of the curvaceous Belén and her boyfriend Fabrizio Corona enjoying some downtime in Formentera.

The high-end labels included on the oh-so-glamorous rails read like a who’s who of Italian designers, including Pucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada and Giorgio Armani just to name but a few…

It’s been raining off and on here in Ibiza for the past two weeks – and so after rearranging my sock drawer and looking for bottle tops under the fridge, I’ve also done a bit of aimless internet surfing (as you do!), about Ibiza (standard), about fashion (of course)… and funnily enough, about snakes. I’d rather not see them at all in the flesh, of course, but having said that, one of my favourite trends at the moment does happen to be snakeskin…

You’ll be pleased to know I discovered there are no deadly reptiles living here in Ibiza, and although there apparently are some (harmless) snakes around, you’re more likely to encounter them in one of the acts on stage at Pacha than sunbathing at Salinas or strolling down Vara de Rey!

But back to their beautiful scaly skin… Unlike fur, which can get you covered in red paint if you wear it in the wrong place, reptiles – snakes in particular – seem to be fair game. I certainly don’t have any warm feelings towards them, so I’d much rather they were made into shoes, bags and jackets than wriggle around my neighbourhood!

The trend is not entirely new – it seems to reappear every so often, but this time it was Prada who kicked it off when they showcased an amazing python skin coat at their Autumn/Winter catwalk show earlier in the year. It would have taken a fair few slithery creatures to craft that creation – has anyone missed a single one of them?

There have been a few other versions of the snakeskin coat, other labels have picked up on the trend in more subtle ways – shoes, bags, scarves – and singer Rihanna has even been rocking Linda Farrow’s python sunglasses lately. It’s a very rock star look – but you can avoid looking like an ‘80s glam rocker if you simply stick to accessories (leggings a la Axl Rose are strictly for genuine rockstars).

The snakeskin trend is set to continue into next year too, but while the current look is for natural shades, next Spring/Summer will be all about coloured snakeskin. Think red and electric blue python wedges and you’ve got Alexander McQueen’s shoe collection covered.

So, feel free to call me a hypocrite – I’d rather go naked than wear fur after all – but snakes are not warm, fluffy or cute and I say best they be fashioned into something useful like a wallet.

Which as we all know, you definitely need if you’re out and about in Ibiza!

Fortunately for Ibiza’s fashionistas, shopping never goes out of style and with new season collections hitting boutiques faster than you can turn the pages of Vogue, it’s handbags at dawn (well, 10am when the shops open!) and credit cards at the ready as you prepare to battle it out against the locals on the shopfloor!

OK, that may be a little dramatic, but let us assure you, when it comes to sale time, it’s a no-holds barred approach!

In the meantime, if you’re looking for a seasonal wardrobe overhaul, you can’t go past personally chosen collections at reVOLVER – you may even get some expert styling tips from co-owner and White Ibiza style blogger  Catherine Sanchez while you’re at it. The behind-the scenes team included  photographer Gary Houlder, YOU’s fashion editor Caroline Baker and fashion assistant Phillippa Bloom plus producer Megan McCluskie and on-set producer Tracey Lee Thompson, proving it takes an army of people to create a shoot this good – it’s not as easy as it looks!

Gorgeous model Bex Fleetwood from Premier was given her sexy ’60s style beauty boost by expert make up artist Caroline Barnes from Frank Agency, using Max Factor to create sassy cat-eye liquid liner looks and a peaches and cream complexion. The look was completed with an OTT bouffant style by Choccy at onemakeup.com using the classic L’Oreal Elnett to keep its height and volume in the notorious Ibiza humidity.

Shot on location at hotel Royal Plaza Ibiza, the images revolved around a typical Ibiza holiday style scenario – by the pool, chilling out on sun loungers, lazing the day away and capturing it all on camera.

The result? The perfect Ibiza capsule wardrobe, a touch of bohemian style mixed with retro glamour and sexy prints – just pack and glow, as it says on the cover!

WHAT: Muffin Top sunglasses by Henry Holland for Le Specs. A cross between an oversized round frame and a flat-top, they are fun, fabulous and very different.

WHO: Thankfully, the complete opposite of those sporting the original Muffin Top look (in case you don’t know it refers to the spillover when someone wears a pair of tight jeans and too-short top – we shudder to think!). According to Holland, this shape is good if you’d like to wear round frame trend but need a bit more structure in the shape.

WHERE: El Chiringuito at Es Cavallet‘s mega closing party this weekend, shimmying away to Mr Doris, Andy Baxter and none other than Groove Armada! Then from next week onwards, sport them at long, lazy lunches at Yemanja (a favourite of the designer himself).

The fashion buying for Spring/Summer 2012 takes place during the busiest time of the season in Ibiza, which means going to London, Paris and Milan and back in a day is essential. Which also means dealing with an early morning Easyjet flight (they fly direct) and long security queues (unheard of in winter), not to mention the stress of getting a taxi at the same time as the Vagabundos crowd is coming out of Pacha. Not easy!

It’s always an interesting experience, taking that first flight of the morning from Ibiza airport – depending on the destination there might be people drinking beer in the queue, looking like they need another holiday (like those returning to London), or looking glamorous, tanned and well rested (flights to Milan).

After the stress of getting there,  at least the collections are looking great! In general there is still lots of colour to be seen, although not the block colour that was big in 2010 – more patterns, some fluoros and different textures. There have strangely also been lots of Olympic themes… not just from the British designers, proud that London is the host of next year’s games, but from all over the globe. I’ve seen a collection of skirts and jackets called ‘The Swim Team’ made from wetsuit material (we’re not buying them here at reVOLVER mind you), t-shirts with Olympic medals, and of course the ubiquitous Union Jack, which never seems to go out of favour.

Considering sport and fashion don’t generally go together (except in the case of a footballer like David Beckham modelling for Armani), I find this is bit odd!

Fortunately there are also lots of good variations on the theme… lots of gold for starters. For women there is also super-sexy figure hugging wear for those with the body of an athlete and draped Grecian-style numbers for those of us without. And for men I’ve seen some of the most fabulous footwear EVER from Y-3.

Things are looking good for the athletes themselves too, with the aforementioned Armani to design the uniform for the Italian team, and Stella McCartney on board for the British. If every country ups the fashion stakes like this, there will be as much competition at the opening ceremony as the Games themselves… it would be a pretty impressive catwalk show!

So with the prospect of fabulous clothes in fabulous colours worn by the most amazing bodies on earth, (and I can’t quite believe I’m saying this with the closing parties only just over)… I’m looking forward to next summer already!

Georgina Scarbrough of 365 Productions is an expert when it comes to selecting the right locations for visiting fashion and production teams, and when Stylist Magazine planned to shoot colourful, floaty chiffon dresses, her selection – the abandoned, graffiti emblazoned ampitheatre ‘Fiesta Club‘ in San Agusti – was an inspired choice. One of Ibiza’s coolest yet eeriest locations, it provided the perfect juxtaposition of fashion and urban landscapes.

Alexander Fullerton was the stylist, asssisted by Morag Paterson, while the photographer, Kate Martin, was assisted by Barnaby Newton. Model Valeria Garcia was the perfect otherworldly beauty.

Hair and make-up artist Carol Morley created very strong rainbow eyes and afro-esque locks, using make-up by Shu Uemura and hair products by Bumble & Bumble.

Under the blazing Ibiza sun, the kaleidescopic colours of the dresses ‘popped’ against the graffiti and crumbling concrete walls – we imagine they would also look perfectly in place in the Pacha VIP!

OK, so BASICALLY there are two things a girl can count on in life. Number one is that peach will NEVER fail you with a tan. Ever.

When Grazia’s beauty team headed to Ibiza earlier in the summer to shoot their Summer Beauty Awards editorial, they enlisted the services of 365 Productions, who helped arrange permits, locations, catering and much more!

Models? Cameras? Spotlights? Bling? All of the above (and truckloads of the latter) were in abundance last Saturday night, at the Pure Form ‘Art in Motion’ showcase at El Hotel. Models strutted their stuff in gold, silver and lavender creations by Elkke, dripping in stunning jewellery made by the Pure Form collective of Ibiza jewellers, including JOY Jewellery, Mambo Queen, Ana Ostrum, Ela Joyas and many more, with pop-up boutique inside the bar so onlookers could snap up their favourite pieces on the night.

When asked what attracted her to the Ibiza lifestyle, Georgina Scarbrough (co-founder of Ibiza production and location agency 365 Productions) doesn’t hesitate to answer. ‘That is easy!’ she says. ‘The sunshine, the beautiful island, the free spirited people… and it is where I fell in love.’

‘I love living here for so many reasons,’ she continues. ‘The winter and the summer are so very different but I love and look forward to them both. The winter is great for relaxing, walking on the beach, chilling out at our villa, doing hot yoga, being healthy, shopping in Ibiza town, catching up with friends and getting ready for the summer! Then the summer is for working like crazy, meeting lots of interesting, creative and talented people, enjoying warm summer evenings, eating at the fantastic selection of island restaurants and going to the beach on a (very) rare day off!’

‘I was never the type of person who could sit in an office all day long… I would go mad! When I lived in London, all I ever thought about was when I could next be back in Ibiza! Here I get to work in incredible locations like the beach, sailing on boats, amazing location houses, hotels, the old town and hidden spots we know about that make amazing pictures. The days are always different and it is very exciting to be around the creative teams we work with. It can get stressful at times but it is worth it when our teams get pictures they love and leave the island happy!’

Just got back from Barcelona where the city smells of autumn… In Ibiza, lucky us, we still have three weeks left to enjoy the terraces, our favorite clubs and beach clubs. Now that the pace has slowed down, it’s an acceptable time to make conjectures and decide where be our first trip in October will be…

My own first destination is Madrid. Not only to see the new store COS and go mad at the H&M Gran Vía, but above all, the Yves Saint Laurent exhibition at the Fundaçion Mapfre museum from October 6, coming directly from  Paris’ Petis Palais museum. It is the first retrospective dedicated to him in Spain and the location could not be more perfect, on Paseo Recoletos, beautiful, and featuring a very interesting free program kept throughout the entire year.

From Madrid, I’ll fly to London to visit other exhibitions in the autumn which I have recommended in the September issue of Amnesia Magazine, ‘Postmodernism: Style & Subversions 1970-1980′ at the Victoria & Albert Musem. Back on the island however, before leaving, pass by S’Alamera and go through the exhibition hall of the Paseo Vara de Rey, where up until October 9, you can view the work of Ehrenberg Ake, the artist popularly known as’ the Swedish Van Gogh’.

Three exhibitions to receive and enjoy the autumn, and an editorial launch  that is no less interesting – to some, even moreso: ‘Irreverent’, the book where Carine Roitfeld reviews her 30 years in the fashion world, the last ten of which she was director of Vogue Paris.

If the trends is nearing completion are white, soft and nude, that which is coming strikes me as black and sophisticated. In both cases, always minimal, and with yellow, my new and deepfound love. This is the look with which I am about to cross the border after passing through two major parties, We Love closing, and after dawn, Amnesia, The Best Global Club.

‘What’s not to like?’ says Catherine Sanchez, White Ibiza style blogger and owner of super-cool Ibiza fashion boutique reVOLVER of her adopted home of Ibiza. ‘Sunbathing in January, stunning scenery, long lazy lunches at restaurants with tables in the sand, secret beach parties with amazing music, fun-loving stylish people, friends always visiting… and I can drink a world class mojito at work if I feel like it. (Which I usually do!)’

When asked for an insider’s tip to enjoying the island, Catherine is a little hesitant to spill the beans. ‘You’ll see a lot more of the island if you hire a car (presuming someone is sober enough to drive it),’ she says. ‘Ibiza parking inspectors can be quick to issue tickets, however if you do overstay your limit, the fine is only 3€ if you pay within the hour at a meter. Otherwise it will cost you more than a round of drinks at Pacha!’

Ibiza baby Grace's first photo shoot!

Dutch kids and maternity fashion label Noppies chose Ibiza as the location for their Spring Summer 2011 campaign, from Playa d’en Bossa to the red earth fields of San Carlos, calling on the experience of White Ibiza blogger Georgina Scarbrough of 365 Productions for her expert assistance!

Locations chosen by Georgina and Will Penn of 365 Locations included Playa d’en Bossa beach, Cala Bassa Beach and the red earth fields of San Carlos… with some very early mornings meaning catching a sunrise over Bossa was no longer the domain of clubbers streaming out of Space!

Photographer Karen Rosetsky was surrounded by the beautiful babies and genetically blessed kids from Ibiza as her models, including little baby Grace who was participating in her first every shoot at the tender age of only two months old! Special thanks to proud parents Sadie and Magic!

My boyfriend James does NOT mind buying me presents. You could definitely say he’s a keen shopper (for me). I barely have to blink and he’s there with gifts. Good gifts. Ones in nice tissue paper. I’ve never had a boyfriend who could choose clothes for a girl like he can (we’ll pretend the size zero leather trouser fiasco never happened). It’s truly amazing.

Last week he came home with what can only be described as the world’s most AMAZING kaftan (or Moo-Moo, as my American friend Matt calls it). It’s neon coral pink (my fave colour), it’s cotton jersey (soooo soft!) and it has an awesome neon yellow braided strip down the front (so, like, ethnic).

It has filled a gap in my wardrobe that I didn’t know existed – I can’t take it off and I really don’t want to. My friend Amanda actually has the same one and we love them so much we both wore them to the same party last week (See? Obsessed).

Obviously a kaftan like this needs a bag to match and whilst I was blithely showering at Tropicana Beach at the weekend, James was up to his old tricks… I returned to see a wonderful paper bag of goodies nestled on my lounger – and inside? This absolute shazz-o-rama of a beach bag. It’s a basket, yes; with leather handles, yes; but it’s absolutely COVERED in the teensiest tiniest multi-coloured sequins – it’s ridiculous! And his reason for buying it? A smattering of the sequins are the same neon coral pink as my kaftan. Now that is faultless accessorising.

The adorable little Indian leather flats are a seasonal fave – George Scarbrough and I buy them religiously each summer from Ganesha in the port and wear them until the soles wear through… Oddly enough, the only reason I ever happened upon these in the first place was that, when I used to work for Erick Morillo, I once had to put together a costume for him for a fancy dress party to which he was going as an Indian. In hindsight, it should have been obvious that he meant a Red Indian. Needless to say, he didn’t wear the costume.

‘It was Corina Smith that brought me to the island,’ says hair and make-up artist Sara Muhammad of her business partner in Smack Ibiza. ‘We met about seven years ago, and she was always talking about how amazing Ibiza was, but it had never really appealed to me. Then she introduced me to Ibiza in 2008 and I absolutely loved the lifestyle.’

When the recession hit London soon after, the urge to relocate to a warmer climate struck Sara, so she and Corina forged the idea to launch Smack Makeup Ibiza and headed out for the season. ‘I’d always wanted to do a season somewhere warm,’ Sara says. ‘But I thought, being nearly 30, that I’d left it too late. I totally fell in love with the island and instantly knew I had to come back. In the end, I decided to relocate here completely, I packed up my car and brought everything but the kitchen sink and now here I am to stay!’

‘It’s like the island is my boyfriend,’ she smiles. ‘Even if my work takes me back to London, I’ll always return here. I love the Spanish culture – compared to that hardcore city cycle of getting up at 7am, getting home after dark and then just doing it all again, the quality of life here is amazing. And as much as you can have the party life in Ibiza, there’s also the quiet side where you can retreat… of course the weather does help! I love being able to drive in open spaces, to see the sun setting over the mountains, see the Mediterranean Sea… this is the place I want to be.’

A few weeks ago I wrote about the rising standard of beach dressing here in Ibiza, and how important it is to be able to go straight from beach to bar. I’m still happy to stand by that, but after visiting some of the big name clubs in the past few weeks, I regret to report the same cannot be said for them. What has happened to the standard of dressing in the clubs? It’s gone way downhill and I’d like to complain!

I have (admittedly hazy) memories from years gone by, of the most fabulous of outfits in Ibiza’s clubs, crazy fancy dress at some - but in a good way. I myself suffered in super high heels on hard dance floors, for no reason other than because when you are in the best nightclubs in the world you have to make an effort. Also I’m sure that getting past the velvet rope was not guaranteed – I wanted to impress those unfriendly looking door staff!

The main offenders are definitely male (sorry boys), and they fall into two main categories: under 25 and over 45. The youngsters are often in Ibiza for the first time, so perhaps don’t know any better. However how could they think it is acceptable to wear board shorts and flip flops to a club? And how could the clubs let them in?

The latter category some would say shouldn’t even be there in the first place – it’s a mix of ageing DJs, husbands away from the wives (who normally dress them), and those showing off in the VIP areas, who basically they think they can wear whatever they like. I can only assume the clubs want their money more than they want a good crowd, which is disappointing and very short-sighted to say the least.

Take your cue from the impeccably styled dancers... as long as it suits your figure shape!

Girls in general are a lot better, however in the heat and being far away from home, girls too can slip into ‘holiday’ mode. Dress for your shape please! And if you wouldn’t wear it at home, you probably shouldn’t wear it here.

I’d like to blame the budget airlines and their tiny luggage allowances for the decline, but I think it’s simply pure laziness – people remember that you are not just AT the event, you are PART of it, and it’s your duty to be as fabulous as the setting you’re in and music you’re hearing. Ibiza has the best clubs in the world, with the best music, and it deserves the best crowds too.

So I’m calling on the clubs to enforce the dress code they claim to have, and refuse entry to anyone who hasn’t made an effort (and then popping them straight in a taxi to reVOLVER to sort their wardrobes out!).

Otherwise I’m calling in the Fashion Police!
