When sex doesn’t matter

style-blog-september-unisex

When Lady Gaga played Wonderland at Eden last year she was relatively well known, but since then… well now even my mum knows who she is!  La Gaga has been making headlines (again) this week as she’s featured in the Japanese version of Vogue Hommes, dressed as… a man! Not a drag king or anything vaguely theatrical, but as your average Joe – Joe Calderone in fact, a mechanic from Sicily!

She looks pretty damn good as a bloke if you ask me – and half the world’s gaga-ing media, even if they are still all asking the question – is it, or isn’t it? (more…)

Top of the range

VB range rover

Whenever I drive into Ibiza town I’m always amazed at the number of four-wheel drive cars about (not to mention flabbergasted as to how they fit into those tiny parking spaces!). Obviously people need a car like that if they live in the campo (and it’s true that some of Ibiza’s best kept secrets are not accessible in anything less), but a chic apartment in the Marina Botafoch? Well, this week there are six Porsche Cayennes outside our apartment block – don’t get me started on the Audis and Range Rovers. (more…)

Indulge your inner goddess, Kylie-stylee…

Kylie Minogue - Aphrodite album launch press conference at Amante

Photography by Eli Zuta

Summer beauty in Ibiza this year is all about dedicating your look to Aphrodite – the famous goddess of love, beauty and sexuality. And who better to embrace the look, than 2010’s very own Aphrodite-in-waiting, Kylie Minogue.

Kylie sparkled with boho-luxe beauty when she visited the fair shores of Ibiza recently for the launch of her new album Aphrodite. It’s a look that returns to the fashion and style forefront on a regular basis (albeit with a seasonal update each time) and for good reason – it’s the perfect easy, breezy summery look without having to go to great lengths to look fabulous, from top to toe! Fashion red cards at the World Cup

Ibiza Style Blog, World Cup fashion

We’re already smack bang in the middle of the World Cup, and despite Ibiza being such an international melting pot, the island has (thus far) been slightly devoid of any OTT World Cup fever. Sure you can go to the Dutch, German or English bars in Figueretes, but they have a bit too much atmosphere at times…

But it’s still easy to spot the football supporters, usually due to their fashion sense (or lack thereof). What more can I say? At least the World Cup has given some British tourists a legitimate excuse to wear their football shirts on holidays… though now they’ve been knocked out I hope the message gets across it was only acceptable for a short time only! Strike a pose, there’s nothing to it…

It seems like there is always a fashion shoot going on here in Ibiza. It’s not surprising really, considering some of the beautiful beaches and rock-star villas that make for a stunning backdrop (not to mention plenty of places to celebrate afterwards!). My guess is that most of the world’s top models have been photographed here at some time or another, even if it’s only by paparazzi when they are on holiday.

Whilst I never had any desire to be a model myself when I was younger (and the agencies weren’t exactly knocking on my door!), I must say I’ve always thought it looked quite fun. So when photographer Ana Lui, who does lots of stunning fashion work in Ibiza, (as well as gorgeous shots for the White Ibiza site), offered me the chance to be a model for a day, I nearly bit her poor hand off.   (more…)

Sparkle season

Well I don’t mind admitting I ate my fair share of the pies over winter, which was all very well when it was cooler in Ibiza as I could hide my new curves under a fabulous Vivienne Westwood coat. With the return of the sun though, and all these opening parties to attend, I’ve been finding the clothes I bought in the middle of summer don’t quite fit as well now as they did then! Instead of the figure-hugging numbers I was planning to wear out, it’s been back-to-black until I do a few more Powerplate sessions.

Fortunately 2010 is a good year for accessories! Jewellery trends for are big, bold and dramatic - think statement necklaces, cocktail rings with huge stones, and big hoop earrings. You can put those Tiffany hearts and subtle gold lockets away, Bling. Is. Back. (Did it ever leave I hear some of you say?) (more…)

London calling… Jean-Pierre Braganza

Style Blog, jpbraganza5
Well, opening party season has started in Ibiza, and the beautiful people have been coming out of the woodwork – some sporting tans from three month holidays in the Bahamas, some looking more pale and interesting than ever before… We spent a mere six weeks away, returning to deal with deliveries of fabulous clothes – definitely not something to be left on the doorstep or signed for by your neighbours. Needless to say, there are many new and exciting things for 2010.

The label that excites me most this year is Jean-Pierre Braganza. You don’t get a much more continental European name than that, but Braganza was actually born in London and moved to Canada as an infant. However they don’t call it the Land of the Bland for nothing – Braganza himself declared it a ‘fashion vacuum’ and after getting a degree in Fine Art, couldn’t get back to Europe quickly enough. Decked out in Y-3

Ibiza might be famous for its DJs and its fashion, but until recently, it’s fair to say the two are not usually referenced together! Ibiza DJs (the guys at least) have never really been renowned for their fashion sense – a pair of über-cool trainers has always been de rigueur but aside from that, there was as much sportswear going on behind the decks as style. In fact, the most memorable DJ outfit I can think of in years gone by is Danny Tenaglia and his Yankees baseball cap!

Given that DJs are often hidden away in a hot and tiny booth, you can’t really blame them for not adopting the same standards as their fans on the dance floor. Fortunately, for our dance music heroes, at least they don’t have to enter through the front door, past the eagle eyes of the fashion conscious doormen. Otherwise they may never have made it to work! Fashion crisis? Not here…

Unless you’ve been living on the moon (and next year even that won’t be an excuse if you believe in a certain Sir Branson), you’ll have heard all about the doom and gloom that is the Global Financial Crisis. Banks closing all around the world, governments bailing out bankrupt companies, unemployment numbers on the rise and here on Ibiza’s terracotta coloured home soil, apparently the tourist numbers were down in 2009. Let me tell you though, it didn’t seem to make getting a reservation at KM5 any easier in the height of summer!

On the good side however (and without getting too technical), interest rates are down, and therefore so are most mortgages and rents, plus there are furious price wars going on between everything from new cars and airfares to mobile phones and gym memberships. So provided you have a job, you may well be in a better position than you were before La Crisis reared her pesky head last year when it comes to getting a good deal. (more…)

Oh Comme all Ye Faithful

Christmas in Ibiza isn’t too different from other places in Spain – of course it’s a tad warmer than Madrid and the parties are (obviously!) better, but there are also plenty of families strolling about checking out the Christmas lights and Nativity scene in town, frequent visits from friends and family and everyone indulges in a big dinner on Christmas Eve.

As an expat however, the main difference between Christmas here and abroad is the presents – for starters the gifts don’t happen until January 6th, but even then people don’t go overboard, buying bigger and better presents for everyone and anyone, which makes it rather more relaxing than it is back home.
