Halloween in Ibiza: 31/10/09

You’d probably never know it just by looking at me, but Miss W’s favourite occasion has always been Halloween. While I didn’t grow up anywhere that trick or treating took place, I always envied those American kids and as I got older, aspired to become somewhat of a scream queen. When I arrived in Ibiza, I was thrilled of course to realise that Halloween was a Major Event on the social calendar, one that required maximum effort and military like planning precision…

Even more so than frocking up for a night at Pacha in the summer! Continue reading Halloween in Ibiza: 31/10/09

Tonglen – A Tibetan Breathing Meditation

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Do you ever beat yourself up for things that have happened or situations that have spun out of control? Do you take the weight of the world on your shoulders – feel bad for others when they are ill, down or out of sorts and then feel exhausted yourself by the experience too?

There is enough fear, frustration, anger and pain in the world, so when this arises in ourselves – or in others around us – rather than taking it on board, there is another, ancient method that helps relieve and release the mental, emotional and physical pressure.

Trend watch: Spring Summer 2010

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Finally! After all the closing parties here in Ibiza, the past few weeks have been relatively quiet with most of the dancers, bar staff, boat workers et al leaving in droves, leaving the locals, out of season travellers and the stragglers who aren’t quite sure what their next move is. It’s been nice to wake up without a hangover, and now that the clocks have changed, to a bit of light!  All good news considering it’s time for me review the Spring/Summer 2010 preview for women.

Whilst many cities hold their own Fashion Weeks, there are only four that really count (to us!): New York, London, Milan and Paris.  They are held in that order over September/October. Continue reading Trend watch: Spring Summer 2010

Fish… my favourite dish

Whilst the weather ain’t exactly wintry just yet, it certainly is the time of year to start getting into soups and one pot wonders. The idea of eating a hot soup in summer is positively frightening so being able to cook and eat them again now must be one of the consolations for the sun going down earlier and earlier.

I love soups. I love thinking about them, I love making them and I love eating them. If I can I’m gonna get me cremated in a golden soup tureen instead of a walnut veneer coffin.

Stock is of course an important part of soup making. Purists will tell you that you should use no stock in vegetable soups as it takes away from the essential flavour. Be that as it may I almost invariably use stock in soups because I think it adds depth of flavour. Continue reading Fish… my favourite dish

See By Chloé – the spirit of boho

Ibiza and bohemianism go hand in hand. There are many artists, musicians and writers who have moved to the island because of its acceptance of all things different, yet in many ways the modern use of the word bohemian has become exactly what it is not supposed to be – a description of a certain ‘look’ rather than an unconventional way of living. In other words, people these days want to look bohemian but not act it. It’s not a criticism – let’s face it, there would be nothing fun about living with no air con or eating lentils all day – but what is important is not to forget the bohemian spirit.

One person who had such a spirit, was Gaby Aghion, the founder of French fashion label Chloé. Before Chloé was launched in 1952, luxury fashion houses had only ever produced Haute Couture (made-to-measure) clothing. This meant that anyone who wanted to look different (and like most regular folk, couldn’t afford Haute Couture) went to the local dressmaker with a drawing or idea and got something made up. Fast-forward to today and it’s the kind of thing we might try on a holiday to Thailand… but they never quite get it right do they? Continue reading See By Chloé – the spirit of boho

If I were handing out the White Awards for the summer season of 2009, there’s no doubt the clear winner of best new party venue would be the runaway success story of the summer, the fantastical grown-up playground of Ushuaia in Playa D’en Bossa. And to prove they not only know how to throw amazing parties, but they also know how to go out with a bang, today, was the closing party to end all closing parties, a 13-hour seaside extravaganza with none other than Miss W’s favourite DJ Luciano at the helm.

(I PROMISE after today not to mention his name again… well until next summer anyway!)

2009 Ibiza DJ Awards at Pacha: 24/09/09

Another year, another DJ awards ceremony. Another awards ceremony, another wardrobe crisis. Another wardrobe crisis, another reason to hit the sales… But oops, I digress! Back to the business of the DJ awards…

As with previous years, tonight’s proceedings began with a cocktail party for nominees and press at Ocean Drive Hotel, where the mojitos were free-flowing and the music came from a quirky DJ set-up in a funky little Red Bull-mobile. Then was time to hotfoot it down the road – just a hop, skip and a shimmy down the red carpet – to the hallowed halls of Pacha, where the ceremony itself took place.
